Athens and Northeast Georgia have a rich history, and several excellent books have documented our heritage in wonderful text and photos. This site is OnlineAthens' and the Athens Banner-Herald's attempt to add to the permanent record, and we invite the Athens-area community to participate in this project. Newspapers are often referred to as the first draft of history. Through the years, our photographers have documented everything from politicians to rock stars; from textile mills to churches. Thousands of photographs have dutifully been filed in our archives. And that's where they have resided ever since they were taken. We've decided to bring as many of them as possible back to life. Now we need your help to add the context to our photographs. We also want to provide a home for your historical photographs and knowledge. The Athens Photo History Project is in a forum format to make it easy to categorize photos and simple for participants to add to our history. We will regularly post archival photographs, many of them without any information, and ask the community to provide information about the subject matter. If you have some Athens historical photos, we invite you to share them with our community -- perhaps someone can add to your knowledge. So go ahead and jump on in: |
